After opening its first ‘Pet Friendly’ store in the Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Vila Isabel, the Prezunic supermarket chain expanded the number of units in Rio de Janeiro where the entry of dogs and cats is allowed. Now, customers in Laranjeiras and Park Jacarepaguá can also bring their pets for shopping.
Through this initiative, Prezunic has received the “Pet Friendly Establishment” seals from the Rio de Janeiro City Hall and “Super Pet” from the Association of Supermarkets of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Asserj). Both recognize the stores where dogs and cats are allowed in accordance with Municipal Legislation.
In the ‘Pet Friendly’ stores of Prezunic, customers have access to adapted shopping carts for their pets, on which notices containing the norms established by the Municipality for the presence of dogs and cats in supermarkets are fixed.
Among the rules are the mandatory use of collars or harnesses with leashes, restriction of circulation in food or food handling areas, use of muzzles in the case of medium or large-sized animals, and presentation of vaccination proof if requested. While in the establishment, pets must always be kept inside the adapted shopping carts.
Rio’s Pioneering Work
The entry of dogs and cats into Rio de Janeiro supermarkets was authorized through a Municipal Decree published in August 2022, when Rio de Janeiro became the 1st Brazilian capital to allow the presence of animals in stores.
